Last night my son and I went to see Doc Watson with David Holt at the Texas Union Ballroom. Doc put on an amazing show. It's an outstanding opportunity and experience to see one of the elder statesman of American Folk music, well on in years, but still able to deliver a performance with real spirit and soul.
Doc is 81 years old and while his hands don't move as fast as they used to over the frets of his guitar, he can still rip it up and his impeccable timing is firmly intact. His voice also continues to resonate with conviction and authority.
One of the great pleasures of last nights show was the intimate musical relationship between Doc and David Holt. The respect that David has for Doc is palpable and deeply moving. David, who is obviously in his prime as a musician, blends his voice and various intruments with Doc's in a respectful and supportive way. They meld together musically as if they shared the same blood which, in a figurative sense, I suppose they do.
Doc Watson is one of the great interpreters and contributors to American music and song. If The Hills of Home Tour comes to your area, don't miss the chance to see the great Doc Watson.
