When I turned two I was really anxious, because I'd doubled my age in a year. I thought, if this keeps up, by the time I'm six I'll be ninety. Steven Wright
Thanks to Dave at Scripting News for linking to my George W. Bush quotes. This has caused a huge increase in traffic. I even got an email taking issue with my posting! My first weblog controversy. I'm going to respect the responder's privacy, since the response was by personal email to me. But I am going to post the content and my response.

Every politician says stupid things. At least he hasn't proven himself corrupt.

Thanks for the note and link.
Regarding your corruption comment, I'm afraid I disagree, but not because I'm a big supporter of Gore. George has made plenty of corrupt deals with his friends and backers in Texas and beyond. George W. Bush's campaign is the ultimate example of just how corrupt George and our whole system have become. George, just like all the rest of the politicians that have a chance of being elected, is in bed with whoever will give him money.
Regarding stupid things said, you're absolutely right, every politician says stupid things and thanks for the Gore link I'll put it up on my site today. George, however, tends to say stupid things, stupidly. Check this story:
Let George done it
Our two party system is corrupt. It comes down to money and the amount of money needed to run a campaign guarantees corruption. If you don't run as a Democrat or Republican you are marginalized to a near comical degree. If you try to reform the system once inside, you're committing political suicide.
Sad.

The benefits of weblogs
There have been at least two unexpected side benefits of running this weblog. The first is that I have become webpals with Andrea, of Andrea's Weblog. Andrea lives in Germany and is Andre's partner. Andre runs the Spicy Noodles! weblog and is an employee of UserLand, maker of the software we all use to run our weblogs. My daughter and I will hopefully be visiting Andrea and Andre when we travel to Germany next month with the Austin Girls Choir. That doesn't happen every day.
The second and most recent benefit has been reconnecting with an old friend. In the late 1970's I was Library Conservator at the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University. My office manager/lab assistant was a young woman (we were all young then) named Sally Jo Mielke. She was a huge help to me on the job and was a very understanding and loyal friend during a weird time in my life. A few days ago she somehow clicked to BookNotes, saw the picture of me and my wife Ann, sent an email with a quick 20 year catch-up, and magically we're reconnected!
It seems like the unexpected side benefits are, in the end, what makes it all worthwhile. I love it! (I'm trying to locate a picture of Sally Jo and me from the time that we worked together. That would be a hoot!)
