A room without books is like a body without a soul. Marcus T. Cicero

Clinton declares disaster area as fire forces evacuations of all of Los Alamos, New Mexico

Update:

update: los alamos is largely evacuated now. they're having a quandary because they've got firefighters trained for wildfires, and firefighters trained for buildings, but the two are not interchangeable. to send one or the other into a different style of fire is suicide.

i'm eating dinner, then off to town. i won't be checking email again tonight if red cross can use me. i'll take my video camera with me ... if i have time to get a pic, i'll send you a couple. but if i can be helping people, that'll (taking pictures) be a distant priority.

... garret.

Breaking News:
I have been in email communication with Garret Vreeland since array.editthispage.com went off the air. I received this note from him today after inquiring about the Cerro Grande fire:
it's very, very, VERY bad. the wind is so high, there's nothing anyone can do. i can see the 40 mile smoke plume from the end of my driveway.

houses ARE burning. there's only a canyon between the fire and los alamos, and apparently the fire's jumping the canyon. [los alamos is isolated at the top of a mesa, with it's back against the jemez mountain range.] we're having 25-45 mph winds, gusting to 60. it's going to be worse tomorrow. there's no weather to save anyone, and they've pulled crews off the front lines because it's just moving too fast.

they're still evacuating people, and according to one news source, they're *not* going to try to save houses, just fight perimeter fires. this is way, way out of hand.

so much for the national park service's stewardship of our forests.

people are really coming together, however. all the fancy-shmancy hotels in santa fe have opened their doors ... the native american casinos have opened up. schools are open for business. the fairgrounds in albuquerque are taking all the animals ... they'll board them for free.

there's between 11,000 and 17,000 people who need to be put up somewhere for the night. that's equivalent to 1/4 of the population of santa fe.

i'm going into town later today to see if there's anything i can help with.

... garret.
ps ... supposedly all the nukes are in concrete bunkers underground. the main lab is threatened at this moment (just built, a multi-million dollar building).
pps ... the albuquerque journal has some pics. http://www.albuquerquejournal.com
ppps ... there are three other fires going on as well. ruidoso, cuba, and bosque.

Andrea has posted a list of "ten of her favorite books". Hmm, maybe this could be the next community project.
